Wet and pedally Canmore Enduro
June 18, 2014
The first race of the Kootenay Rockies Enduro Series got underway this past weekend in Canmore and as expected it was a wet and pedally affair. I had some misgivings about this race as I was tipped off by some trusted fellow racers that the course was quite flat, very pedally and, in their words, "hard tail 29ers FTW!" Despite the deluge in the forecast and the course not suiting to my strengths (DH), I made the 7-hour trip to the Rockies and set up camp in the rain.
Training went pretty well and I was one of the few that didn't encounter grizzlies and lightning on course - now that's Extreme! Sure enough, the course was wet, slippery, rooty and there was a substantial amount of sidehilling and screw-you steep sprint climbs that seemed completely unnecessary. It was clear the course favoured the XC disciples, but I was going to give it my best shot.
The night before race day it of course rained cats and dogs and the course was muddy slick clay. First stage went well despite the slop and I tied for first. It was stage 2 that was my undoing when the rear end kicked out unexpectedly in a whatever bermed corner and I found myself high-sided and sliding down the track on my back. With no momentum, I had to sprint up the next muddy hill and lost a ton of time. The next few stages were longer, with considerable pedalling and I just kept my flow and focused on good clean runs. Stage 4 was by far my favourite, and the longest.
I ended up 4th in Masters on the day, which isn't horrible but not the top spot I expect. I'm excited for the rest of the series, which is assuredly more downhill-oriented. But first I'm off to race the Ashland Mountain Enduro in Oregon at the end of the month. Super excited about this race as it's the original enduro in North America and one I've wanted to race for years.
